Writer in Residence – Evan Fallenberg

When I first presented Evan Fallenberg’s Light Fell at book clubs I was amazed at the wonderful reactions I received. People sharing their stories and appreciating the art of the work. And then I realized that Evan was the translator of one of my favourites – A Pigeon and a Boy. So I started corresponding with him, and grew to enjoy our connection – me in Toronto, and Evan in Jerusalem. Now, I have the joy of bringing him to Holy Blossom and meeting him in person. We welcome award winning Israeli writer Evan Fallenberg as part of our Holy Blossom Centre for Contemporary Jewish Literature. He will be Writer-in-Residence March 26, 28 & 29, and will speak to us as a translator of literature from the Hebrew, as a novelist and as a creative writing instructor.

Join us for an evening with Evan Fallenberg where Evan will read from his two novels, will talk about the art of writing, the themes of his books [including LGBT characters and plot lines], critical response and more.
Conversation will follow, including Q&A with the audience. If you have a chance to read Light Fell and/or When We Danced on Water it will enrich your experience, but it’s not necessary.
Members free. Everyone is welcome, non-members a $10 fee [payable at the door]

Evan Fallenberg, will offer feedback and the opportunity to discuss your work with peers.

Put two people in a room (or a tent, or a swimming pool) and you’ve got a story.  But where do these characters come from and how do we make them real enough to pass muster while at the same time avoiding stereotypes? This master class will be devoted to the creation of plausible, interesting characters who bring with them stories so riveting that all we need to do is sit down and write what they’re telling us.  We will also devote time to scene work – how to activate those characters once we’ve created them.  Class time will be a mix of discussion and writing exercises.”

Evan Fallenberg is the author of the novels Light Fell and When We Danced on Water and translator of prominent Israeli authors such as Meir Shalev, Yair Lapid, Batya Gur and many others.  His novels and translations have won or been shortlisted for a variety of prizes, including an American Library Association award for fiction and a PEN translation prize.  He teaches creative writing and literary translation at Bar-Ilan University of Israel and City University of Hong Kong.
