They Took Manhattan: Broadway’s Legendary Jewish Songwriters
Monday, November 23, 2015
8:00 p.m.
Dear friends,
I am proud to announce and promote this incredible production as the opening concert of our Musical Heritage Concert Series.
I promise you that it is a unique undertaking of renowned journalist, Robert Cushman and the creative initiative of two theatre personalities, Alan Gordon and Eric Kirsh, both members of Holy Blossom Temple. We are in for a marvellous entertaining evening. The evening is co-sponsored by the Musical Heritage Committee and Stagecraft of Holy Blossom Temple.
They Took Manhattan is a cabaret evening of music and song celebrating the contribution of Jewish composers and lyricists to the great American musical. Created by National Post critic Robert Cushman, They Took Manhattan looks at how talented Jewish songwriters like conservatory-trained Jerome Kern and the street-smart Irving Berlin became the founding fathers of the classic American popular song. These two contrasting and complementary talents in turn mentored and inspired the next generation – George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, Oscar Hammerstein, Harold Arlen – furthering a tradition that was to stretch out to Stephen Sondheim and beyond – encompassing in fact almost every important Broadway songwriter. Join us for They Took Manhattan – a celebration of the best of Broadway, music and song, sung by the best that Toronto has to offer.
They Took Manhattan – Great Music, Great Singing, a Great Evening!
