Do You Have Faith? Teiku

In a world in which faith isn’t easy to come by – think the Oslo massacres as but one instance of real life trumping hope – and in a world in which it may be equally problematic not to have faith of some kind, the best response may be: “Neither do I have faith, nor do I lack it.”
Such equivocation may result for various reasons: our inability to comprehend the world; God has proven less than effective at giving us reason to believe; or, maybe, because life has been rough and faith hardly seems a possibility. In these and other cases, the best answer may be, “teiku – We simply don’t know.”
Even the philosophical greats of the Jewish tradition, believers all, have said much the same: There are instances regarding faith when we ought simply say, teiku.
