Shalom Everyone:
Today we learned the difference between Mitzvot – commandments and Minhagim – customs. We also talked about the importance of Se’licha – forgiveness, as it is the time to ask for forgiveness during the ten days of repentance or atonement between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We learned the different sounds of the Shofar and told the story of Avraham, his son, Yitzhak with the prayer that we started to learn during Hebrew– the Avot.
As part of our wishes for the New Year, the students wrote about things which make them are proud of themselves and things they would like to do better in the coming year. Interesting how almost all want to be better students, better at sports, better friends and learn more about their Judaism.
We read the prayer “Unetane Tokef” a powerful Piyut that is sang on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we listened to it in Hebrew and also the version by the late Leonard Cohen – Who by Fire.
In Hebrew class, we are working on improving our reading skills. It will take time and I need your help. It is essential for the kids to practice at home. They have a copy of the prayer Avot and it’s best is to read out loud.
Another great way for practicing is to visit www.behrmanhouse.com . It is an excellent way to learn, review and catch up with the class. Enter the site practice prayer, click on the toolbar learn, choose Hebrew from the drop
down menu, click on @home, click on Hinneni 2 (Red) and choose the prayer you want. Musical notes located by the prayer signify that you can listen to the singing of the prayer.
I’d like to wish you all Shana Tova
