Yes, synagogue politics were alive and well in western Canada in 1895! And the role of women in politics, both within synagogue life and the greater western world landscape, was taking a new form. The events in this play represent a microcosm of political and social change which eventually redefined the role of women in the social fabric of North America. When the women of the Hebrew Ladies’ Association at Congregation Emanu-El in Victoria B.C, propose the idea of inviting a female rabbi to lead high holiday services, to the all male board of directors, the least anticipated outcomes emerge for all involved on this bumpy ride toward equality at the bima.
