Lo Tin’af: Forbidden Adultery and Yiddish Women’s Poetry
Zohar Weiman-Kelman, the Anne Tanenbaum Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Toronto.
Taking a critical look at the commandment “Lo Tin’af,” the commandment forbidding adultery, we will follow biblical commentary and ask what exactly is being prohibited and what we can understand from this prohibition. As we face the passive position this prohibition allocates women, we will listen for a different voice, coming from the Yiddish speaking past. This is the voice of Yiddish poet Celia Dropkin (1887-1956), who described her own adulterous affairs in her published and unpublished poems. Through her poetry, we will glimpse a new version of the Jewish past and a new understanding of “Lo Tin’af.”
