We’d do well on such a day and occasion to understand for what goals we should strive, in raising in our culture, a liberal Jewish child. And we can be guided by the writings of one of the great Jewish scholars of the last century. Rabbi Donald Splansky – Sermon: March 1, 2014.
I listened to this sermon, given on March 1, 2014 in the early hours of Friday April 11th – -and after I had listened to its depth and breadth, I listened yet again. “To raise, in our culture, a liberal Jewish child” – – my son was born and raised in Jamaica, which does have a small Jewish population – – and though the names would mean nothing to anyone reading this, a more “liberal Jewish boy” than David da Costa one could not hope to meet. I taught David at Campion College, a Catholic school, run by the Jesuits, and a school parents wanted their boys to attend. After David ha taken his Bar Mitzvah, he no longer wished to lead prayers – – but he was the best student – and lead by example.
