September 16, 2018 in Grade 2
This week in our first Grade 2 class we learned all about the Jewish holidays! We looked at the different holidays and when they occur during the year. We focused on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur in particular. We learned about the concept of “tashlich” where we symbolically get rid of our sins by throwing bread into a stream. By doing this we indicate our desire to start the new year with a clean slate. Also, we learned the different names of the shofar sounds as well as what each shofar blast sounds like.
In Hebrew class we learned how to read the word Shabbat in Hebrew (שבת). We learned the names of the three letters that make up the word. The three letters are Shin, Beit, and Tav. Not only did we learn the letter names and what they sounds like but we also learned the vowels that help the letters have an “ah” sound. We were starting to get the hang of what the letters sound like but it would be great if the students could practise these letters at home!
Thanks so much!
