“Repentance, Forgiveness, and Responsibility: Emmanuel Levinas’s Famous Talmudic Reading”
In 1963, at a meeting of French Jewish intellectuals on the topic of “Forgiveness,” Levinas gave a Talmudic reading called “Toward the Other.” The text he discussed is from the Talmud, Yoma 85a-b and 87a-b. This famous text raises interesting questions about repentance, forgiveness, and interpersonal relations.
