Rosh Chodesh: Tevet

Jews greet the beginning of a new month with special prayers and psalms.

However, Tevet is a difficult month. We have scarcely finished celebrating the miracle and joys of Chanukah when we are thrust into thoughts of grief and sadness. During the month of Tevet 589 BCE, the Babylonians began their siege of the First Temple in Jerusalem. In modern day Israel, the 10th of Tevet has been designated as Yom Hakaddish Haklali – the day on which we mourn those whose date or place of death is unknown. The life of a Jew is always a mixture of joy and sadness, happiness and grief.
