Reform Zionism: What is Our Unique Vision for Israel?

After attending the first session in Rabbi Englander’s series on Reform Zionism, I can’t wait for this week’s continuation.

Rabbi Englander’s wealth of knowledge and engaging style made the first session enjoyable as well as thought-provoking. The course explores our relationship to Israel and Zionism specifically as Reform Jews. It’s an important topic and Rabbi Englander helps us to explore our own views and emotions as we try to define the concept of Reform Zionism.

The pioneers who founded the State of Israel were primarily secular. Yet early on, religious thinkers began to incorporate spiritual Jewish teachings into the Zionist movement. After the Six Day War in 1967, the particular blend of nationalism, mysticism and messianism became the dominant ideology of Israel’s religious right.

Thursdays, November 14, 21, 28, 2013  at 7:30 p.m. and December 5, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.

Yet there is also a liberal expression of religious Zionism, championed by our Reform movement.  This course will explore the teachings and activities of religious Zionism, on the right and the left, both in Israel and in the Diaspora.

Our own impressions and opinions will add to the “platform” of Reform Zionism, still taking shape.
