CANTORS ASSEMBLY ON A MISSION TO SPAIN
HOPE AND BENY ARE LEADING A MISSION TO JEWISH SPAIN
JULY 3 – 14, 2016
There are now over seventy Cantors with congregants from all over North America participating.
We will explain some new information concerning logistics, lectures and touring. This trip promises to be an outstanding emotional, informative, educational, and most of all an outstanding musical experience in the most lavish concert halls, cathedrals and festivals of music.
This mission will look at the rise and fall of Jewish life in Spain – the most important Jewish civilization of the Middle Ages.
Lectures with renowned experts will create a portrait of Jewish life in Madrid, Cordoba, Toledo, Barcelona and Seville.
The Golden Age of Jewish life in Muslim Spain (711-1200) was a unique period in Jewish history. It was characterized by a high degree of cultural interaction between Muslims and Jews, a renaissance of Hebrew literature, and Jewish pursuit of secular culture, science, and philosophy. By 1200 in the Christian re-conquest of most of Spain, many of these achievements were reversed. Ultimately, the reversal of Jewish fortune culminated in the massacres of 1391. Unfortunately, it all ended with the phenomenon of the Marranos, the Inquisition, and the expulsion of 1492.
