The Middle East is undergoing massive changes, the likes of which it has not witnessed for a century.
New realities are being created by popular uprisings, regime changes, civil wars, countries imploding and new developments in the global balance of power.
As a result, Israel faces new challenges, threats and dangers, but it also encounters new opportunities. This is a period of transition, calling for new, creative and imaginative solutions to problem new and old alike.

Netanyahu has now been Prime Minister three times. His newest government has just completed its first year in office. It is based on a very different coalition from previous ones, and it has to deal not only with a tumultuous region in transition, but also with a changing reality in Israeli society, with new cleavages, new generations claiming their share in the wealth of the nation and demands for ideological change which threatens the old status quo.
Yet the present government faces now a major watershed, which once again threatens the very existence of the ruling coalition.
