Celebrating Jack and Sybil Geller – Shabbat morning, June 25

Recently, Jack and Sybil Geller each turned 80, and together celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. We will acknowledge these milestones here at Holy Blossom — Jack and Sybil’s communal home for decades now — on Shabbat morning, June 25th at 10.30 a.m.

First, these thoughts about Jack, a trail blazer for Jews in the Toronto legal world. Years ago he lead the way for Jews straight into the heart of Toronto’s legal establishment. He was not only the first Jew made a partner in a prominent Bay Street firm, but subsequently also emerged as an important figure in various legal circles, sometimes behind the scenes, sometimes at the centre of the scene.

How did Jack break the barrier and leave his mark? The establishment could not resist – indeed, they knew they would need – his wisdom, his fine mind and his firm backbone. The whole Geller package delivered with grace, clarity and strength, usually quietly but, when required, in an authoritative voice (which meant decision rendered, next matter).
