This novel is a fascinating mix of the past and the present. Have you ever considered how people will remember you? Or, how much change in the world have you witnessed over a lifetime and how do you put that into words? Addie Baum, a grandmother, talks of her past to her twenty-two year old granddaughter. Through her words, we get to experience the life of a Jewish immigrant from Eastern Europe in the early 1900’s. We learn of the hardships she and her family faced but it is also her story,
as she struggles to find her place in this new society and fights to find her own way to learn and to develop a woman’s voice.
Addie is described as a ‘‘girl with gumption’’ and she continues on her path with much courage. This is a fascinating look at what the world was like in the early 1900’s, the developing role of women, and is also about sharing our stories and passing on our wisdom to others while we can.
