Ariel Sharon – An Evening of Commemoration and Learning

On Wednesday, February 19th we’ll remember Former Prime Minister of Israel, Ariel (Arik) Sharon z”l, whose illustrious military and political career included prominent roles in all of Israel’s major wars and a courageous attempt to promote peace with the Palestinians.
The evening will include both a memorial to this great yet controversial leader, and reflections on his career and its impact on the history and events in the modern State of Israel.
The program includes a lively panel discussion, featuring Jonathan Kay, Managing Editor for Comment at the National Post and Consul General DJ Schneeweiss.

Jonathan Kay’s interesting article on the withdrawal from Gaza was contrary to the generally accepted consensus of opinions on that event. I can’t wait to hear what how and the Consul General assess Sharon’s career as both a soldier and politician.
It is certainly understandable that tonight’s event is postponed. I certainly hope that everyone who planned to be with us tonight will be at HBT on Feb. 19. We are grateful to Consul General DJ Scheenweiss and Jonathan Kay for being with us – both of them are well suited to speak and lead an interesting, informative and important discussion about the legacy of Ariel Sharon z”l and how his life has impacted the life of Israel and the current situation. We have much to learn from our speakers and sharing our thoughts and views will make for a very interesting evening.
In 1970, when I was studying on Ulpan Akiva in Netanya, we were told that General Sharon was coming to speak to us. My idea of a General was someone with a military cap and a row of medals on his jacket – like Eisenhower. Imagine my surprise when a young man walked out in front of us in a short-sleeved white shirt open at the neck, and leaned on the back of a chair while he spoke to us, and then mingled with us with no sign of his high military rank. No salutes! No clicking heels! What a guy!
